Welcome to the mesh. The SCOUT v1 is a rugged, standalone Meshtastic node designed for off-grid communication. Follow this guide to get your device online.
1. Vital Hardware Setup
-
Install the Antenna: Screw the included LoRa antenna onto the top SMA connector before powering on the device.
⚠️ CRITICAL: Never power on the SCOUT v1 without the antenna attached. Operating the radio without a load can permanently damage the internal Heltec hardware.
- Charging: Your node is equipped with a 3000mAh internal battery. Use the included USB-C cable to charge. The device is compatible with any standard 5V USB power source.
2. Control Interface
The SCOUT v1 features a custom-mapped rotary encoder for easy navigation without a smartphone.
-
Rotary Encoder (The Dial):
- Rotate: Scroll through the Meshtastic menus (Status, Map, Peers, Messages).
- Center Click: Press the dial to Select/Enter. Use this to open messages or confirm settings.
- Reset Button: Located on the side. A single press reboots the system.
- Boot Button: Used for firmware flashing and advanced configuration. (Normal users typically do not need this).
3. Messaging & Navigation
- Canned Messages: Navigate to the messages menu and scroll through your pre-defined responses. Click the encoder to broadcast.
- Manual Entry: The SCOUT v1 allows for manual character selection. Use the dial to highlight a letter and click to confirm.
- Screen Wake: If the screen has dimmed to save power, a quick click or turn of the encoder will wake the display.
4. App Pairing & Configuration
Your node is pre-flashed and ready for the European mesh.
- Region: EU_868 MHz
- Default Channel: LongFast
- Download the Meshtastic App (iOS/Android).
- Enable Bluetooth on your smartphone.
- The SCOUT v1 will display a 6-digit Bluetooth PIN on the screen when a pairing request is initiated. Enter this PIN in the app.
